The movie opens with a shot of Reggie, a tiny puppy who appears to be pleased living with his owner Doug. Reggie is confusing Doug’s many gestures of kindness when it is clear that he is a rapacious, heartless, and violent dog owner. This kind of denial is typically used by those who have been in abusive relationships.
