Tom, a young man who runs a tiny bookstore in New York City, has a troubled past that involves self-harm. He is content with his existence, despite Sandra, a college student who comes into the bookstore in search of books but departs without paying, electrifying him. She makes Tom so amazed that he invites her out, and after one night of dating, they begin to get along. Sandra opens up to Tom, the son of a powerful businessman, about her personal background and provides him the money he needs to lead a comfortable life. As Sandra finally leaves, Tom is unclear of what to do. A violent and drug-dependent man named Max is coming home to his mother, Madeline, who wants to help him but doesn’t really believe in him.
