In the beginning of the film, Matt grudgingly agrees to drive the kids to school. While traveling, he receives a phone call from an unknown person informing him that there is a bomb inside the car. If any of the passengers attempt to flee, the device will detonate automatically, and the mystery caller will detonate it remotely if they attempt to contact the police or if Matt fails to execute their directions.
