There is a very clear modern western beauty to the interaction between Liam Neeson and Kerry Condon, which takes place in 1974 while the conflict is still raging. It’s written in Peckinpah’s best tradition, yet it feels more like a B-movie. It is difficult to articulate the ferocity and depressing senselessness of violence. But Robert Lorenz deftly strikes the right balance and combines it with Irish wit and appropriate music. Moreover, Finbar frequently makes veiled references to specific Corbucci westerns.
