Following a brief prologue in which knights battle a creature that breathes fire, we find Elodie years later, cutting wood in a distant location. She lives in a destitute, chilly town with her younger sister Floria. They’ve come to the conclusion that food is worth trading the fortress’s curtains. However, a messenger bearing a letter embossed with a royal seal shows up. A queen is offering Elodie a substantial dowry that will bring prosperity back to their country if she marries the prince.
