As the son of Mexican immigrants, Richard faced bigotry and poor working circumstances as a young man in Los Angeles. Richard and his wife Judy were gang members in the 1970s. Richard resolved to take accountability seriously as the 1980s began. His first exposure to administrative levels came when he applied for a janitorial position at a Frito-Lay plant. Clarence, the floor inspector, who explained him the ins and outs of the company’s procedures, was another connection he established. Richard begins his new job with high hopes for success, but he quickly realises that the corporate world is a harsh place where the voice of the underdog is not accepted. Richard sees an opportunity to create a product for the Latin market and decides to create a hot salsa that will distinguish and delight Cheetos.
