Marcus is an assistant coach for Lowa junior league basketball team who is frustrated by his inability to gain NBA attention. Marcus is suspended from the team following an altercation with Coach Phil, preferring to drown his sorrows in alcohol. Marcus, who was arrested for DUI, is sentenced to 90 days in jail and assigned to coach The Friends, a Special Olympics team comprised of intellectually disabled athletes. Marcus, who was hesitant to commit to such an idea at first, quickly gets the hang of it, learning how to connect with his players and their specific needs in the hopes of forming a viable team during the winter months. Johnny is one of The Friends, and his sister, Alex, sparks a casual fling with Marcus, putting the two on the path to love as the disgraced coach tries to reclaim his place in the NBA.
