Nica Dove, the story’s main character, grows up in an orphanage that the other children refer to as the grave. Her only life goal is to be adopted by a loving family. When the time comes, she is adopted alongside Lionel, the only other orphanage resident with whom she is not friendly. Nica sees Lionel as a very mysterious horrible child, which is unexpected given that the two were raised in the same orphanage, where everything is shared by everyone.
