Leila, an Iranian American, defies her parents Shireen and Ali Reza’s expectations in the opening scene of The Persian Version. Iran, New Jersey, and New York are the settings for the movie. Flashbacks from Leila’s early years show her trying to reconcile her Iranian duties, such cooking and taking care of her eight elder brothers, with her Brooklynian hobbies, like basketball and idolizing Michael Jackson. Leila’s relationship with Shireen only becomes more strained as she ages. But Shireen also has a secret of her own, which her mother has revealed to her granddaughter Leila as a scandal.
