In the 1990s, Robert Freegard, a handsome man, presents himself to the world as a good person with a successful career and excellent interpersonal skills. In the hopes that his apparent sincerity will catch her attention, he tries his luck with Alice, a tough corporate lawyer he likes. Alice succumbs to the bait, begins dating the comforting man, cautiously enters a long-term relationship with her boyfriend, and discovers his personal history. Nothing appears to add up the way it should, so Alice decides to hire a private investigator to learn more about Robert. The story of Sophie, a trusting young woman drawn into Robert’s mind games after he pretended to be an MI5 agent and put her through years of tests to prove her loyalty, is told to Alice, who is on the lookout for evidence of another woman.
