The outstanding cast greatly enhances the movie. Many recently starred in the critically praised Broadway production. This was directed by Samuel L. Jackson’s wife, LaTanya Richardson Jackson. Jackson, who played Boy Willie in the original Broadway production of The Piano Lesson in the 1990s. It portrays Doaker here with a calm authority and a worn-out wisdom. Being the living memory of the family is a nice change of pace for Jackson, who is known for being a fiery actor. You wish he had a sequence or two that truly showcased his abilities in the part.
