The mother-daughter melodrama of the film’s main story is fueled by Pereda’s leisurely, atmospheric directing. Which is concerned with seeing and believing as well as the connections between generations. You see, the town has a five-day tourist event at the chapel named after it each year, complete with ceremonies led by the local medium Ivana Peralta. One issue: Emma, her little apprentice. Who is eight years old, discovers Ivana dead from natural causes on the night of the festival. Being in hospice care for her mother’s sickness has left Emma herself excessively haunted. She is determined to discover the techniques of channeling the dead so that she can continue to communicate with her once her mother passes away.
