A struggling parent named Nick purchases a domestic AI named Alice to assist in managing the home. The lifelike robot becomes obsessed with her new owner. The things quickly get lethal. Motivated by a perverted sense of allegiance, she sets out to destroy his family, whom she believes to be the real danger to his happiness. Watching M3GAN with an adult robot wreaking havoc instead of a youngster is what subservience feels like. The film’s spooky happenings are quite effective, with Alice’s character development from helpful housekeeper to compulsive android being shown in a way that is unsettling the whole time.
