Bernie and Cinder arrived in Element City many years ago with the fire people, eager to start a new life in a city that also had communities of water, air, and earth. They migrate to Fire Town, where Bernie creates his own business selling fire-related items to the people. Soon after, they adopt Ember as a daughter, planning to raise a child capable of running the shop when she is old enough. Ember wants the job, but she can’t control her wrath, frequently “going purple,” and her most recent outbursts have destroyed the shop’s water pipes. Wade, the inspector appointed to investigate these issues, enters the structure, effectively ending Bernie’s delusion. Ember develops close to the waterman in order to encourage Wade to return the tickets, and despite their physical and psychological differences, the two form a connection that feels acceptable to both.
