The adventure film is based on the genuine story of James Brooke, the Rajah of Sarawak. He was the inspiration for the Rudyard Kipling story The Man Who Would Be King and the novel Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad. Brooke was giving his services as a fighter in the Bengal Army. He traveled to Borneo (Sarawak) which was at that point heavily influenced by the Bruneian Empire in 1839. He helped the legislative head of the Sultan of Brunei.
