As she navigates a difficult home life with her sick brother Max and her strong mother Kristine, who has frequent emotional outbursts, we follow our teenage protagonist Doris. Doris is charmingly quiet, reasonable, and polite, perhaps because she has always lived under the shadow of her brother’s illness and doesn’t even seem to realize the beauty inside of her. Max’s family moves him to a hospice as his illness turns into a game of waiting, and Kristine starts spending her evenings there. And this is when, in the early 2000s, during Terri Schiavo’s famous right-to-die court case, Doris first meets Woody Harrelson’s activist husband, Paul Warren.
