On television, Jack hosts the chat show Night Owls. Because the show’s audience was so small when it initially aired in 1971—too small to beat Johnny Carson in ratings—Jack had to rely on sensationalism to keep viewers interested. When Jack’s wife Madeline dies in 1977, he musters the courage for his annual Halloween show, which takes place during sweeps week and relies on the host to pull off an elaborate hoax. He hires Christou, a television-ready psychic who interacts with viewers and quickly detects the presence of evil in the studio. Carmichael, a skilled magician and skeptic, rejects such allegations. Lilly, who has escaped the Cult of Abraxas, joins Dr. June, a parapsychologist marketing a book about the Devil.
