Will Smith contributes his star power and physical steadiness to this graphically violent civil war drama despite his current challenges. It is based on the true story of Whipped Peter, an escaped slave who in 1863 after enrolling at a Union military barracks in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, displayed his horribly damaged back to two passing photographers there, covered in a lattice of raised welts and whip marks.
